Online and paper dictionaries both have their place. Good paper dictionaries let you see neighboring words as well as many idioms and expressions that frequently won't fit on the page of an online dictionary. On the other hand, online dictionaries can be very fast if you are reading or writing near a computer. They also sometimes have sound recordings of the words, so you can hear exactly how they are pronounced. I use both paper and online dictionaries, depending on where I am working and what I am trying to do.
Whichever format you use, choose an advanced learner's dictionary. The definitions in these are written in a more accessible manner, and they include good examples of how to use the words properly in sentences. Below are my recommendations.
